“The old one”

La Chapelle-Achard owes its name to the lords of Mothe-Achard who had a place of prayer built there in the Middle Ages. Since the merger with its neighbor La Mothe-Achard in 2017, it is part of the new municipality “The Achards”.

Located in the center of the area and close to the expressway, the cycle path Vendee Cycling and an important artisanal area, it is coveted by newcomers because of its practical side. Even if the appearance of the town has radically changed, the district of La Chapelle-Achard still has a few points of interest.

The two little ones ponds of Pré de la Fontaine are a popular place for fishing. Children's games and picnic tables make it a pleasant place to spend time with the family. It is at Pré de la Fontaine that the “Nature and Flavors Day”, highlighting local gastronomy and environmental initiatives.

The little church stocky is one of the oldest in the region. It dates back to 11e century and has retained its original choir. Next to the church is a slight elevation, known as “Announcement Stone” until the middle of the 20e century. The country guard was stationed there after mass to proclaim notices and news.

Leaving the village towards Sainte-Flaive-des-Loups, we notice an imposing hosanniere cross the 15e century, monument where the faithful sang hosanna on Palm Sunday. A few steps from the church is located a small washhouse modest, recalling the arduous work of the “washers” of yesteryear. There are also a few picnic tables there for a quiet lunch break.

Cultural life

Every two years, the district of La Chapelle-Achard hosts the artistic event “Wanderings”, known for its original formula. Indeed, the artists' works are exhibited in atypical places, mixing public and private places. The residents of the town are lending their garden and even their living room for the exhibition. La Chapelle-Achard is thus transformed into a large museum, bringing art and the public together.

Since 2013, the building of the old village school has housed the private theater The Chatbaret. This professional troupe offers a varied program. Combining theatrical comedies, musical evenings, own creations and dinner shows, it plays an important role in the cultural life of the Pays des Achards.
