Introduced in France by the 1910 law, the tourist tax is set up on the initiative of the municipalities or local authorities having a tourist activity on their territories. Once perceived, it allows communities to have more resources to develop Tourism.

The tourist tax in a nutshell

  • Who pays the tourist tax?
The tourist tax is paid by holidaymakers during their stay or when booking online.
  • Who collects the tourist tax?
The tourist tax is collected directly by the hosts during their client's stay or by payment intermediaries (Ex: Gîtes de France, AirBnB, Abritel, etc.). Owners or managers of tourist accommodation must display the tourist tax rate in their establishments.
  • What is the tourist tax used for?
Returned to the local community, it is a source of financing for part of the operating and investment expenses linked to Tourism. The allocation of the tourist tax relates to expenses intended to encourage tourist visits to the Territory.
  • And concretely, what types of projects can be financed by the tourist tax?
The development of cycle paths for cycle tourists, the programming of activities for tourists or locals (visits to producers, workshops with craftsmen, nature outings, festivals, etc.)
