Since the 9th century, a castle has occupied the rock overlooking the valley. It was destroyed in 1628 on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu.
At the foot of the old castle (just behind the church of Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche), bucolic gardens laid out in tiers have become a place for walks leading to the Jaunay river.
This development (with a picnic area, a water point and public toilets) was rewarded by the National Committee for Flowering, which awarded the town the Heritage Enhancement Prize.
